About Fairchild Semiconductor

Fairchild Semiconductor was founded by eight employees of Shockley Semiconductor in 1957. These employees approached Fairchild Camera and Instrument, negotiating the opening of Fairchild Semiconductor to make silicon transistors as opposed to the more commonly-used geranium. Fairchild’s first marketed transistor, the 2N697, was developed in 1958, and was sold to IBM for $150 per transistor to build the computer of the B-70 bomber. 

In 1960, Fairchild developed the first planar integrated circuit and revolutionized modern electronics. Fairchild soon came to dominate the analog integrated circuit market, introducing the first IC operational amplifiers, and developing low-cost manufacturing techniques for the semiconductor industry. By the mid-1960s, Fairchild Semiconductor’s sales comprised two-thirds of total sales of the parent company. 

In 1976, Fairchild released the first video game system to use ROM cartridges, the Fairchild Video Entertainment System, which enjoyed strong initial success but soon fell behind in popularity to the Atari 2600. Without new products and an increasing reliance on niche markets such as hardened integrated circuits for military and space applications, Fairchild was operating at a loss. In 1979, Fairchild Camera and Instrument was purchased by Schlumberger Limited for $425 million. 

In 1997, Fairchild Semiconductor was refounded as an independent company. Later that year, the company acquired the semiconductor division of Raytheon for $120 million, and in 1998 acquired Samsung’s power division, which produced power MOSFETs, IGBTs, and more for $450 million. In 2001, Fairchild acquired Intersil Corporation’s discrete power business for $338 million and Impala Linear Corporation for $6 million in stocks and cash. In April of 2011, Fairchild Semiconductor acquired TranSiC, a silicon carbide power transistor company based in Sweden. In 2016, Fairchild was acquired by ON Semiconductor for $2.4 billion.
